Chinese Maritime – Continuous Improvement Leads to Recovery of the Global Industry

The setback of world’s economy in 2008 and 2009 took its toll on the maritime industry. However, an upward trend has emerged from the first quarter figures of 2010. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), PRC, the two major indexes (capacity and new ship orders) of China have recorded steady growth for the first quarter of 2010. The total capacity reached 14.57 million DWT, a substantial increase of 128 per cent and accounting for a worldwide share of 41.4 per cent. What’s more, China’s new ship-order tonnage has recorded 8.26 million DWT, an impressive 10.5 times larger than figures from the same period in 2009. This accounts for 47.8 per cent of the world’s market share. Although all those figures are just a part of the whole picture, China is showing its strong adaptability when it comes to tackling changes in difficult times. Senior officials, Mr. Zhang Xiangmu, director of Equipment Industry Department, MIIT, PRC and Mr. Wei Jiafu, chairperson of China Shipowners Association and president of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO), both recently highlighted the importance of industrial innovation for the Chinese maritime industry. It is a trend that is necessary for continuity and healthy development of the industry. Communications and ideas exchanges are key elements of innovation. While everyone is keen to search for new ideas and information in high-potency markets, Marintec China can undoubtedly provide them with the ideal platform, serving this purpose in the right venue at the right time while providing business opportunities to the right people.
