In the last 30 years how do you see the industry has changed? How has your company adapted to these changes?
The industry in China has undergone profound change in the past 30 years. ABS has been working with our partners in China throughout that time, committed to setting standards for safety and excellence as one of the world’s leading classification organizations. In a constantly evolving industry, ABS works alongside its partners tackling the most pressing technical, operational and regulatory challenges so the marine and offshore industries can operate with enhanced levels of safety, security and responsibility.
We work closely with clients in China through a network of 11 survey port offices across the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The team is a blend of experienced local and expatriate staff offering efficient communication and access to global resources to add value to Chinese marine and offshore industries.
What major shifts have you seen in the last 30 years in terms of government policy which has either helped or hindered your business?
The first four 10,000 tons deadweight export ships that Jiangnan Shipyard built, back in 1921, were classed by ABS. Since the beginning of China’s reform and opening up, ABS has provided classification services for Chinese marine and offshore industries.
ABS is a long-standing contributor to China’s moves to expand domestic LNG capability. So far, 14 large LNG carriers have been delivered to ABS Class in China (at Hudong), with a 45Kcbm LNG Carrier scheduled to be delivered from CMHI this year. As of today, ABS has worked closely with China shipyards on medium and large size gas carrier projects.
ABS is a leader in classification in China and is the classification society of choice for Chinese shipbuilders. As a result of its links with China shipbuilders, ABS is a trusted advisor chosen to support the industry’s world-leading innovative projects.
From the early 1980s, ABS has actively participated in and supported China's offshore oil exploration and production development, promoting safety and witnessing the technical progress and growth of the industry.
ABS joined China’s Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliance to work with industry partners to advance autonomous shipping, an important step towards the future launch of China's first unmanned cargo vessel. The design will integrate features of independent decision-making, autonomous navigation, environmental perception and remote control.
Has internet technology and in particular ecommerce and IOT (internet of things) affected your company?
The fusion of technologies in the cyber world is blurring the lines between physical, digital and biological spheres – connecting people, systems and data. Digitization and connectivity is transforming the marine and offshore industries through sensors, as well as data and autonomous systems, improving both performance and compliance. The new norm is data-intensive and requires us to continuously adapt to technological change.
At ABS, we are innovating with data and digital capabilities to safely and effectively bring these technologies to the maritime industry.
How has your company had to evolve in terms of product offering in order to adjust to the changes in the industry?
The limitless ocean of data live-streamed from vessels today is already sufficient to render them ‘functionally transparent’, visible to a once-unimaginable depth of technical clarity. The digital capabilities to accomplish are coming and ABS is charting the course. This will truly be ‘disruptive technology’, because its effects will reverberate, not only through the industry, but also through the working lives of its marine assets. Every aspect from management to maintenance, repair and survey will be informed, improved and inspired by the insights of digital transformation.
ABS launched its strategic ABS FutureClass™ plan in 2017, to accelerate its digital evolution and chart its journey towards the future as a data-driven, innovation-inspired, agile technology company dedicated to sustaining and strengthening its leadership role.
